Résumé : | Perineal trauma following a vaginal birth affects around 350,000 women in the United Kingdom (UK), of which approximately 70 per cent will require suturing (Kettle et al 2002, Thiagamoorthy et al 2014). If perineal trauma is misdiagnosed, misclassified and inadequately repaired, as described in the NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) report (NHSLA 2012), it can lead to lifelong consequences such as incontinence of faeces and/or flatus, chronic perineal pain, rectovaginal fistula, colostomy as well as sexual and psychological sequelae. |
