Résumé : |
The Hot Topic, written by consultant midwife and supervisor of midwives at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Julie Frohlich, commemorates Tricia Anderson’s article written for the Digest in 2002 The misleading myth of choice: the continuing oppression of women in childbirth, and asks ‘…a decade on are we any further forward’?
Tricia’s article highlighted the plight of pregnant women wishing to exercise their right to make truly informed and individual choices about their own labour and birth care (Anderson 2002). It described the cases of three women who wanted to give birth peacefully in hospital, looked after by midwives, and who concluded that they had no choice but to give birth at home with independent midwives or have their babies ‘the hospital way’. Over a decade on from The misleading myth of choice, Julie looks at where are we now with the choice agenda and asks what we must do to ensure further progress both in the public and private sector. Her article considers various aspects of the ‘informed choice’ debate, and ‘…in direct contrast to the three examples given by Tricia Anderson in 2002, outlines three more recent cases of women who similarly presented with twins, VBAC and breech and who were all able to make fully informed and supported choices about their own labour and birth within the NHS’. |
