Résumé : |
South american countries have a similar cultural and political context around birth, together with historic processes. Almost every country in the continent has had or still has a strong, indigenous system of midwifery. They have also officially exported a biomedical model, included for the practice of modern obstetrics. This has generated a transformation in the way South American women are giving birth and in the options they have. This first article explores such social and cultural dynamics, as in relation to the practice of local midwifery and the new players that have emerged as a response to the over medicalisation of birth in the continent. |
