Résumé : |
Background : It is estimated that 85% of women who have a vaginal delivery will have some degree of perineal trauma and that 60-70% will require suturing. Evidence indicates that antenatal perineal massage (APM) is effective in reducing perineal trauma. Objective : To determine ways for midwives to increase and promote APM as well as to encourage and support women with the practice. Methods : Relevant databases were searched using a PICO tool (Figure 1) and well-defined inclusion criteria. Four relevant studies were identified: three quantitative and one qualitative. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) (2018) was used to assess them. The methodology of each study was reviewed and compared, and two themes were identified. Findings : There is a lack of APM awareness among women; however, overall, women reported feeling positive about the technique. Women showed more acceptance of the practice and higher continuation rates with the correct information and educational support. A minimal number of midwives provided information and support about APM in routine antenatal appointments. |
