Résumé : |
Hypoglycaemia is a common metabolic disorder during the neonatal period (Tin 2014) and is the cause of 80,251 admissions to neonatal units in 2013 (NHS Improvement 2017). Currently in the United Kingdom (UK), the NHS is making it a priority to reduce the number of admissions to neonatal units of full-term babies, born at or after thirty-seven weeks and, therefore, the unnecessary separation of mothers and babies (British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) 2017, Trust A (2018). In the NHS Improvement (2017) report Reducing harm leading to avoidable admission of full-term babies into neonatal units, of the 80,251 neonates admitted to neonatal units in 2013, 60% of those were full term (37-41 +6 weeks’ gestation) (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) 2017). NHS Improvement (2017) also reported that hypoglycaemia was responsible for nearly 12% of all full-term admissions. In rare cases hypoglycaemia can lead to long-term neurological impairment and death so it is of great importance that health professionals identify neonates at high risk of the condition (BAPM 2017). Hawdon et al (2017) highlight the great cost to the NHS that neonatal hypoglycaemia is responsible for including the cost of litigation claims, showing areas where changes can be made to reduce this cost and improve patient safety. This paper will discuss the physiology of hypoglycaemia, which neonates are at high risk of developing the condition and the midwife’s role relating to the management and prevention of hypoglycaemia. |
