Résumé : |
Becoming a parent involves a period of transition, but little is known concerning the impact of this on the father, particularly surrounding their support needs. This interpretive qualitative study aimed to increase the understanding of the physical, social and emotional changes that men encounter when they become fathers; with a particular emphasis on the support that midwives may be able to offer to assist men in the transition to fatherhood.
Methods : fifteen men were recruited to participate in cohorts of four focus-based group discussions. A final one-session cohort was open to all participants to sense-check the final data and discuss any long-term outcomes from engaging in the study. Results : transition was an overarching theme and this was a thread throughout all of the data. Six themes emerged : being prepared, emotional impact, challenges and responsibilities, relationship with partner, relationship with baby and culture and myth of the perfect dad, with some themes also having sub-themes. Conclusion : men want to feel included in the journey to becoming a parent and have a desire to be informed about how life-changing this can be. They also require specific consideration by midwives and other health professionals to enable them to support their partner surrounding the perinatal period. provinding a source of reliable information and support regarding the transition to parenthood is viewed by men as a vital aspect of the parent/midwife relationship. The focus of this paper is on the theme 'being prepared' |
