Résumé : | Twenty per cent of women in England and Wales, equating to 3.4 million women, experience some form of sexual abuse (SA) from the age of 16 and, worldwide, this figure increases to 35 per cent (UN Women 2019, World Population Review 2020). Thus, significant numbers of women experience SA, which has psychological and physical effects and which, it is fair to consider, may interfere with breastfeeding. This article explores the psychological, physical and biological effects that women with a history of sexual abuse (HOSA) experience in their breastfeeding journey, and critically examines whether the connotations of breasts within different cultures have an effect on this experience. |
