Résumé : |
Background: Skin-to-skin contact is considered the simplest and most effective way of initiating breastfeeding. It is an evidence-based and cost-effective natural method that is easily available and reproducible. The first hour of birth is critical as skin-to-skin contact in this period not only promotes successful breastfeeding, but also regulates the newborn's body temperature and increases chances of survival.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of nulliparous women regarding mother and baby skin-to-skin contact at Al Wakra Hospital (AWH) Qatar. Method: Structured questionnaires were used to assess the knowledge of nulliparous women admitted in labour and expected to undergo a low-risk vaginal birth at AWH. Results: Questionnaires were completed by 400 women. Three hundred and seventy-six women (94 per cent) had received information about skin-to-skin contact and 24 women (6 per cent) had received no information. Only 26 (6.5 per cent) of the women had previous experience of skin-to-skin contact. Conclusion: This study shows that the majority of nulliparous women had knowledge of the need for mother and baby skin-to-skin contact within the first hour of birth. This high percentage is probably due to the effective antenatal health education provided to women during their visits to antenatal clinics. |
