Résumé : |
This literature review will explore the views and experiences of midwives screening for domestic violence (DV) and discuss the background, definition, prevalence and implications of screening for DV in pregnancy. The study focuses on midwives working in an antenatal setting. It is acknowledged that there is an extensive body of information relating to DV and that publications often reflect its wider aspects which are not necessarily specific to maternity care. In an Irish context, a gap in the literature is demonstrated, therefore justifying the need for the study.DV or intimate partner violence is recognised as a global public health issue. Definitions include ‘violence against women’, ‘intimate partner violence’, ‘family violence’, ‘wife battering’ and ‘gender-based violence’.The recently publishedWomen’s Aid impact report 2017: against the odds(Women’s Aid 2018), records over 20,079 reports of DV against women and children. The report outlines the impact of DV on women’s health. The impact is significant, both physically and mentally, with long and wide-ranging effects, or, in extreme cases, death.Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO 2005) reported one in every three women is abused at some stage in their lives. In a study of 15 countries, the population of pregnant women who reported being physically abused in at least one pregnancy, exceeded 5% in 11 of the 15 settings, the lowest being 1% in Japan increasing to 28% in Peru. |
