Résumé : |
In the postnatal period, many women are affected by urinary incontinence following an instrumental birth, caused by perineal trauma. This altered health state can lead to further issues for women in the puerperium, such as relationship breakdowns, bonding or feeding difficulties, and lifestyle changes, ultimately damaging their mental health state. The role of the midwife, including management of urinary incontinence, is of major importance in midwifery care for women experiencing this condition. Reflecting on a case study throughout, this paper analyses the risk factors associated with postnatal urinary incontinence, whilst exploring the effects it has on women’s mental health. The importance of early detection and referral pathways to other health professionals will be highlighted, emphasising a midwife’s duty to follow guidelines and provide effective communication and support for women with individualised care needs. |
