Background:Bonding between a mother and her baby starts after delivery by placing the newborn on the mother's chest, initiating skin-to-skin contact. This is an evidence-based, cost-effective, miraculous method that is easily available and is a reproducible technique which helps mothers initiate breastfeeding in a natural way (Alive & Thrive 2010, World Health Organization (WHO) 2018).
Aim:The aim of our project is to facilitate immediate initial contact and promotion of breastfeeding amongst mothers giving birth in Al Wakra Hospital. Methods:The audit team performed monthly statistical data collection to monitor trends of initial contact initiated between mothers and their newborns. Results:From 2016 to 2017, at least 90% of mothers and their newborns were able to have initial contact in deliveries conducted in the labour and delivery room at Al Wakra Hospital. In 2016, there were 3332 deliveries with 3051 initial contact implemented (281 not implemented). Likewise, in 2017 there were 3573 deliveries with 3255 initial contact implemented (318 not implemented, due to variable factors such as the baby's admission to NICU, third-stage complication (in which the mother was transferred to operating theatre (OT) or the Continuous Monitoring Unit (CMU), postpartum haemorrhage, instrumental delivery with complication, or the mother's refusal of initial contact). In 2018, of 3503 deliveries, 3192 (91%) had initial contact between mother and newborn and 311 did not have initial contact (as above due to variable factors). Conclusion:Al Wakra Hospital successfully implemented this project from September 2015 in its labour room and OT, promoting breastfeeding and as a Baby Friendly hospital initiative. |
