Currently it is acknowledged that for low-risk pregnancies, physical activity (PA) is both safe and advantageous (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) 2020). From a professional stance, a proposal of a safe group exercise session of moderate intensity for low-risk pregnant women has been created. In doing this, the current UK prenatal and postnatal fitness specialist requirements (CORE Fitness Education 2019, 2024) have been successfully met. This has been developed based on review of the latest ACOG guidelines (ACOG 2020), the 2019 Canadian guidelines (Mottola et al 2018) and current UK recommendations (Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) 2019) for PA during pregnancy.
The purpose of this is to act as an initiative for relevant qualified professionals to successfully support pregnant women to implement PA in pregnancy within specific group activities. This article focuses on a pregnancy group exercise class and is intended for the first trimester, with a follow-UP article on an antenatal exercise programme for the second trimester to come. It is formatted with a clear description in the following order: 1. Pre-class considerations 2. Warm-up activity 3. Main class activity 4. Cool-down activity. |
