Current shortages in the midwifery workforce are placing extremely high demands on staff and increasing risk for those accessing care. To meet these increasing demands, attention must be paid to midwifery education, a sector also experiencing workforce challenges. Midwives working in universities use their practical experience to support students in becoming competent practitioners but it is not mandated for them to practice clinically alongside their teaching role. This prompts discussion about whether the knowledge and experience of midwifery educators could be better utilised in clinical areas, with the aim of reducing attrition rates of students, midwives and educators, and consequently improving care for those accessing maternity services.
