Résumé : |
This literature review aims to investigate the socioeconomic and political factors contributing to refugees' poor experiences of maternity services. Because of the vastness of the topic, and the constraints of this article, the literature review will focus on the most frequently recurring themes raised in the available research. The definition of 'asylum seeker' is a person who has fled their home country, cannot return through fear of persecution and would like to stay in the UK as a refugee (GOV.UK 2014).
Many studies use the terms 'refugees', 'asylum seekers' and 'migrants' interchangeably. Although these are three distinct groups who may face similar challenges, they often differ. For example, a refugee is someone who was previously an asylum seeker, has had their claim accepted and is able to remain in the UK as a refugee (GOV.UK 2014). This is an important topic, because of the rapid inflation in the numbers of asylum seekers entering the UK, with a 10 per cent increase in asylum seekers making up all immigrants to the UK between 2019 and 2023 (UK Parliament 2024), and concerns raised about their treatment in the NHS and poor experiences. NB: Throughout this article the term 'women' is used, as this is what is described in the research reviewed; however, the findings are relevant to all asylum-seeking birthing people. |
